En la década de 1800 carecía de Barcelona un hospital que funcione bien. Hospital De Saunt Pau construido en los anos catorce en cientos era viejo, lleno de gente y falta de higiene en el que estaba metido en Raval. Después de un incendio en el año 1887 que dañó el hospital y un nuevo hospital fue construido después. Un banquero que se llamó Pau Gil i Serrá dió dinero para el propósito. La obra ganadora en un concurso de arquitectura fue rechazada por una comisión médica sentía que carecía de soluciones buenos a los requisitos sanitarios y de higiene. En lugar ayudó Doménech para dibujó el hospital.

Domenech optó por llamar al hospital en un ambiente agradable, con pabellones separados en línea con las ideas de los tiempos más progresistas sobre el cuidado de la salud. El hospital fue construido después de los mismos principios que la construcción del Hospital de Eppendorf de Hamburgo, en la Universidad (1889).

A Domenèch le parece que los pacientes nececitan árboles, aero fresco, color y un ambiende conviniente para poder recuperar comfortablemente. Para poder evitar los ambientes labyrinticos, que eran ordinarios en hospitales grandes, eligía construir los departementes de logístico abajo de la tierra, donde nadie podía verlos. Separando los departementes a paviliones pequeños era posible isolar los pacientes con infecciones, pero tambien crear un ambiente para estos pacientes que sentía como un pueblo. Trabajaban duramente para crear un ambiente cómodo por los pacientes usando decoraciónes del arte y por eso muchos de los escultores y artistas participaban en el proceso del construcción. Desde diez años el proyecto se quedó sin dinero, y era terminado con dinero de donaciónes.

Todos nos quedamos asombrados por la belleza de los pabellones y todos tuvimos que fotografiarlos. El hospital está pasando por un proceso de renovación enorme, y por lo tanto era muy ruidoso, sin embargo, realmente disfrutamos nuestro tiempo saliendo juntos alrededor del edificio fantástico. Para resumen, nos gustaría recomendar los estudiantes que van a Barcelona el próximo año para visitar este hospital hermoso. Es una experiencia agradable y no te arrepentirás.

Barcelona lacked a well-functioning public hospital in the end of 19th century. Hospital De Saunt Pau was built in the 1400s was old, crowded and unsanitary there it was sandwiched in Raval. The hospital was really injured after a fire accident in 1887 and steps were then taken to build a new hospital. A Catalan banker, Pau Gil Serra, donated money to the purpose. The winning contribution was voted down in an architectural competition by a doctors committee that thought the situation missed satisfactory solutions on the hygiene requirements. Instead they turned to Deoménech in Montaner that was given the task to draw a sketch of the hospital.

Domenéch chose to draw the hospital in a nice environment with detached pavilions in line with the times most progressive ideas about health care. The hospital was built after the same principals as the construction of Hamburg's Eppendorf University Hospital in (1889).

Domenèch considered that the patients needed trees, fresh air, colour and a convenient environment for a comfortable recovery. In order to avoid the stressing labyrinth like environments, that were common in large hospitals, he chose to dig all the maintenance departments and connection paths underground were they were invisible. By separating the departments to small pavilions it was possible to isolate the patients carrying infections, but also to create a village like environment. A lot of energy was put into creating a pleasant environment for the patients using art decorations. Therefore several of Barcelona’s best sculptors and artists participated in the construction process. Domenèch strongly believed in the healing power of art. After ten years the project ran out of money and was afterwards finished with resources from donations.

We walked by the hospital when it was graced with sunshine. All of us were astonished by the beauty of the pavilions and everyone got busy photographing them. The hospital was going through a huge renovation process, and therefore it was very noisy, nevertheless we really enjoyed our time hanging out together around the fantastic building. To summarize we would like to recommend the students that are going to Barcelona next year to visit this beautiful hospital. It is a pleasant experience and they will not regret it.
